What is product design in operations management?

Product design in operations management includes two types of designs:

1. Design for Function

The product is created to be functional during the functional design process. Dimensions, materials to be used, and the type of final finish necessary for aesthetics are all decided upon. At this point, the designer is more concerned with the product than with the manufacturing procedures. Mechanical factors, customer appeal, cost, the ease of operation and maintenance are the primary concerns.

2. Design for Production

The designer considers incorporating alterations and new concepts into the product during the production design stage to make it more appropriate for production. The concepts used in this stage are:

  • Standardization: The designer might make the production of the part easier by standardizing a part or the entire product. Standardization can also save production costs by reducing several product variations. It enables businesses to produce greater, and generally more cost-effective, quantities of fewer things. However, standardization also has drawbacks such as stifling innovation and providing customers with fewer options.
  • Modular Design : Modular Designs make production and maintenance easier. This style of design is often utilized in computers. Products are constructed with easily detachable subassemblies or pieces.

Simplification: The designer may include some characteristics in the design that, while not vital to the product's function, cause major complications during the manufacturing stage. To address these issues, some aspects of the design must be streamlined.
