What skills do you need to be a technical writer?

Besides in-depth technical knowledge on matters they are going to write about, good technical writers also need to equipped themselves with these critical skills:

Excellent writing skills:

Excellent writing skills include editing skill, research skill, communication skill, etc. A good technical writer not only provides readers with technical knowledge, they also need to make it clear, concise, logical, and easy for everybody to understand.

Critical thinking skill:

Critical thinking and problem-solving skills refer to the ability to gather, analyze, systemate information in order to make reasonable and clear explanations of information.

Logical thinking:

This is one of the most important skills of a good technical writer. Good technical writers’ jobs are not only knowing what those technical terms are with their in-depth knowledge, understanding the context of the information and can express it by words with their writing skill, but they also have to arrange it in a logical hierarchy and approach that target readers can easily understand. 

Technical skills:

This is a term to mention the skill to research, filter, digest complex knowledge, divide it into small sections for better approaches, and turn those pieces into simpler information for readers to understand.

User experience (UX) design skill:

The objective of a UX designer, or UX writer, is to write copy in a precise, straightforward, clear, concise, and helpful manner. And for providing the most effective way of understanding technical information to readers, the purpose of a technical writer is also no different from that
