What is the difference between visual effects and special effects?

While the terms "visual effects" (VFX) and "special effects" (SFX) are often interchangeable, they are not the same thing. Both are essential in cinematic and visual experiences but differ in methods and techniques.

VFX refers to the manipulation of digital imagery or video footage in post-production to create a final product that appears more realistic or imaginative than the original footage. Freelance visual effects artists use software to create elements that cannot be achieved practically or would be too expensive or dangerous to attempt.

On the other hand, special effects involve physical elements to create illusions the camera can capture, including techniques such as pyrotechnics, makeup, prosthetics, animatronics, and practical effects.

The main difference between VFX and SFX is the approach used to create the desired effect. Visual effects services create visual effects entirely in the digital world, while SFX artists create special effects in the physical world. VFX artists use their skills to enhance environments, objects, and characters that cannot be created practically, while SFX artists use practical effects to add realism to the scene.
