When should I hire an HR consultant?

How do you know it’s time to hire an HR consultant? There are many reasons, but we've seen some of the most frequent ones listed below.

 

  • You require a resource since you lack an HR department.

Perhaps you are the owner or a member of the executive team of a small business that is not yet large enough to require a human resources specialist (conventional wisdom says you should have one when you hit 50 employees, by the way).

  • You don't have any spare time or a significant project.

You already have a lot on your plate with employee relations, growth plans for employees, and recruiting. It might be wise to contact an HR professional at that time.

  • Your project falls outside of your area of expertise.

No one can be an expert in every area of human resources due to its enormous scope. An HR consultant is a terrific choice if you have a project coming up and you feel a little out of your element, concerned that there might be intricacies and rules you might miss, or simply feel like it'll take you longer as you stop to think things through.

  • Your HR division is overworked.

An HR consultant can be useful if you and your team are burning out or struggling to meet deadlines.

  • You are unaware of your ignorance.

Having a third-party assessment of your HR department's performance can be useful. Contact an HR consultant if something isn't functioning and you're not sure why, or if you simply want to check to see if you're operating effectively and adhering to the law.
