Though there are many popular examples out there that you are familiar with, technical writing actually can be classified into only three types, they are:

1. Product technical writing:

Product technical writing is often made for customers. The writing focuses on providing detailed guidelines, user manuals, and additional technical information about how it should work, how to use it, and how to maintain it for long-term use. Examples of product technical writing include 3 main pillars: Requirements or specifications to run the product, instructions on installing and using, and the frequently asked questions (FAQs).

2. Process technical writing:

This type of writing is made for the internal team or employees of a company. It provides information about how to safely and effectively perform a task/process. The writing often covers the following topics: plans, schedules, notices, metrics, requirements of a job/process, reviews and reports for a project, and any additional information.

3. Sales and Marketing technical writing:

This section covers technical content on how a business establishes and runs in the marketplace, such as the business plan, case studies, white papers, proposals and pitches, legal or business documents, etc.
