What are the common file formats used in synth presets?

Freelance synth presets can save time and effort, enabling you to quickly shape your synth sounds and focus on other aspects of your music production. Some of the most common formats synth presets services use for synth patches are:

  • VST/VST3 Presets : VST (Virtual Studio Technology) is a plugin interface provided by Steinberg Media Technologies. Many software synthesizers use these presets and save them as files with the extension .fxp or .fxb.
  • AU Presets : AU (Audio Units) is a plugin interface standard developed by Apple. They are used by plugins in Apple's Logic Pro or GarageBand software and are associated with the .aupreset file extension.
  • NKI Presets : NKI is the instrument format used by Native Instruments Kontakt sampler. Kontakt is a widely used software sampler, and its presets are saved as files with the extension .nki.
  • SF2 Presets : Many software synthesizers and samplers are based on SF2 (SoundFont 2). SF2 presets are saved as files with the extension ".sf2" and contain sampled sound data with synthesis parameters.
  • SXT Presets : SXT is the file format used by Reason Studios' Reason software containing all of the settings and parameters for a Reason instrument.
  • TFX Presets : TFX is a file format used by many hardware synthesizers, such as those from Yamaha and Roland. TFX presets are saved as files with the extension ".tfx" and contain all of the settings and parameters for the synth patch.
